Cambria: An Alleged History of Deception and Danger
Artificial Stone Manufacturer: Cambria Company LLC: 2000 -2011
Founded in 2000 by the Davis family, Cambria boasts of its cutting-edge quartz processing facilities. However, beneath the shiny surface lies a dark history of allegedly misleading information and allegedly putting workers' health at risk.
Alleged False Promises and Hidden Hazards:
-
Cambria's January 5, 2001 Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) was allegedly riddled with false and misleading statements.
-
The product was allegedly falsely labeled as "Non Hazardous" and the exposure hazards of cutting or grinding were allegedly downplayed.
-
Crucially, the MSDS allegedly neglected to inform workers that wearing an air-supplied respirator is essential to prevent silicosis, a debilitating and deadly lung disease caused by exposure to crystalline silica. This alleged omission, bordering on deliberate concealment, allegedly exposed countless workers to unnecessary health risks.
-
Even the basic precautions outlined in the MSDS were allegedly inadequate and dangerous, promoting ineffective methods like using vacuums or "wetting down" which fail to prevent airborne particles.
Allegedly Shifting Blame and Dodging Responsibility:
-
Instead of taking accountability for their misleading information, Cambria's disclaimer allegedly attempted to shift responsibility to "qualified experts" and "users of the product." Plaintiffs in hundreds of lawsuits allege this tactic further endangers workers by obscuring the true source of the danger.
Expansion and Continued Risk:
-
Despite its allegedly deceptive practices, Cambria expanded into California in 2011, potentially putting even more workers at risk.
Cambria's alleged actions paint a picture of a company prioritizing profit over worker safety. Plaintiffs in hundreds of lawsuits allege their false and misleading information directly exposed countless individuals to the risk of silicosis, a preventable disease with devastating consequences. It's imperative that Cambria be held accountable for its alleged actions and take immediate steps to rectify the situation, including:
- Providing clear and accurate safety information to all workers.
- Ensuring proper ventilation and respiratory protection are readily available and used.
- Offering medical monitoring and compensation to those who have contracted silicosis due to Cambria's products.
Only through genuine transparency and proactive safety measures can Cambria hope to repair the damage they have caused and prevent future tragedies.
