Early Shadows of Silicosis: Cosentino and Silestone
A shadow of doubt hangs over the safety of Cosentino's Silestone, an artificial stone widely used in countertops. Documents suggest that as early as 2001, cases of silicosis, a lung disease caused by silica dust, were reported among Cosentino employees in Almeria, Spain.
Early Claims:
- In 2002, an official document from the Ministry of Labor mentions an inspection at Cosentino's Almeria facility regarding the occupational diseases of three workers: D. Miquel Centas Antolin, Francisco Azor Vargas, and Manuel Gea Martinez, diagnosed with silicosis as early as May 2001.
- Another document from the Ministry of Employment details the case of Jose Araque Martinez, diagnosed with silicosis in 2002. His reported exposure to silica dust came from working with Silestone for eight years.
These early cases raise concerns:
- Were they the first instances of silicosis linked to Silestone?
- Did Cosentino take adequate measures to protect workers from silica dust exposure?
- Are there further unreported cases from this period?
