Stone Italiana S.P.A., an Italian company established in 1979 by Roberto Dalla Valle, has positioned itself as a leader in the engineered quartz and marble industry. The company's narrative, centered on innovation and a revolutionary approach to interior design, paints a picture of a brand synonymous with excellence and creativity. However, a closer examination of their practices, particularly in relation to worker safety and health hazard disclosures, reveals a concerning disregard for the well-being of those who handle and fabricate their products.
Stone Italiana's journey from producing industrially-made marble to pioneering in quartz surfaces is marked by significant achievements and contributions to iconic architectural projects. However, the company's approach to safety, especially concerning the health risks associated with respirable crystalline silica, a predominant component in engineered stone, is notably lacking in transparency and responsibility.
The company's safety data sheets, crucial documents intended to inform and protect workers from potential hazards, have been found grossly inadequate. A 2017 Safety Data Sheet for Stone Italiana's engineered quartz stone identified the presence of 90-93% free crystalline silica but astonishingly limited the hazard identification to risks associated with airborne dust from dry cutting operations. This narrow focus grossly underestimates the full scope of health risks, including silicosis, other severe lung diseases, and lung cancer, associated with silica exposure.
The suggestion that dry cutting, which generates significant amounts of respirable silica dust, could be conducted safely is not only misleading but dangerously false. Regulators have prohibited dry-cutting of artificial stone products precisely because of the high risk it poses for silicosis, a lethal lung disease caused by inhaling tiny silica particles. The failure to adequately warn against this practice and the lack of clear guidance on safe fabrication methods demonstrate a troubling disregard for worker safety.
Furthermore, the safety data sheet's section on respiratory protection is confusing at best, suggesting a variety of dust masks and filters without making it clear that only air-supplied respirators can effectively prevent silicosis in workers handling engineered stone products. This omission is a serious failure to communicate the necessary precautions workers must take to protect themselves from the life-threatening hazards of silica dust.
It is not until the toxicological information section that silicosis is even mentioned, and then only in a manner that implies the disease results only from "prolonged exposure to dry quartz dust." This misleading statement downplays the immediate and severe risk that even short-term exposure to silica dust can pose, further endangering workers' health.
Stone Italiana's approach to hazard communication is not only insufficient but also non-compliant with regulatory standards designed to protect workers. By failing to provide clear, accurate, and comprehensive safety information, the company has neglected its responsibility to ensure the safety and well-being of those who work with its products.
